I’m Jo, an artist & photographer based in London, UK.

After many years photographing live music, events and capturing candid street moments, I’ve now shifted my focus toward portrait photography and ink/watercolour painting centred around storytelling, atmosphere, and emotion. I’m currently training in traditional Japanese Sumi-e ink painting and enjoying learning an Asian art medium under the tutelage of Akemi Lucas Sensei in Japan and this informs a lot of my new art work.

Pigments & Pixels
Whether I’m capturing a compelling portrait or painting a moody landscape, I strive to create imagery that stirs feeling and curiosity. My portraits ask questions of their subjects about identity, experience, and transformation. Portraits are a form of storytelling about people, whether that be a fictional narrative or the subject’s honest truth. Through my paintings, I share a deep reverence for the natural world, often employing loose washes to evoke mood and atmosphere as well as explore different cultures and human characteristics through my ink painting. I also enjoy documenting various destinations through paintings and sketches, whether it be a lush coastline or an historic street in a small French town.

Inspiration
My love of music, travel, nature, and the everyday human journey is a constant inspiration. I’m deeply inspired by East Asian aesthetics and philosophy from Korea and Japan, especially in the practices of traditional ink painting, cultural traditions and martial arts like Iaido which I practice myself. Their emphasis on presence, simplicity, and intentionality resonates with my own artistic process.

With my background in acting and being the daughter of a fine artist, plus many years immersed in the music industry, I’ve always been surrounded by creativity. These influences continue to shape how I see, feel, and create.

The Vision
At the heart of my work is a desire to move others through imagery that invites emotion, tells a story, and honours the human experience. I also enjoy exploring the mindset of the modern artist: how we grow, overcome obstacles, and stay true to a creative life in an ever-changing world.

Art and photography are not just my “work” but how I process the world, express myself, and connect with others on this path.
